You’ll meet your guide early in the morning at our River Store, located at the mouth of the Alberton Gorge just outside Missoula. After signing waivers and reviewing safety procedures, we’ll gear you up with a life jacket and dry bag, then head down to the riverbank to launch.
We’ll float quietly through the stunning Tarkio Canyon, a convergence of steep canyon walls, winding riverbanks, willows, and towering pines. Your guide will row while you scan the skies and shoreline for birdlife. Expect peaceful silence, the occasional splash, and ample opportunities to spot hawks, eagles, waterfowl, and songbirds.
Once we reach the takeout point, your guide will help you out of the raft and provide a final birding recap. You’ll have the option to grab a few last photos, share sightings, and head back with memories of Montana’s wild beauty and winged wonders.
Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes and shoes that can get a little wet. We recommend sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, binoculars, and a birding field guide. A light jacket may be helpful for early mornings.
Spring and early summer are prime times for birding. While you’ll still see birds into July and August, the number of species is typically higher earlier in the season.
Not at all. This trip is designed for all levels. The raft is rowed by a professional guide so you can focus entirely on the scenery and spotting birds.
Absolutely! A waterproof or well-protected camera is a great idea. We also recommend bringing a dry bag if you want to bring your own gear.
Depending on the time of year, guests have spotted bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, mergansers, warblers, flycatchers, and more. The canyon offers diverse habitats that attract a wide range of species.
